FAQ

How much does it cost and how do I pay?
Our beef costs $2.50/lb for a whole beef, $2.60 for a half, and $2.70 for a quarter. Additionally, you need to pay a cut and wrap fee that goes to our butcher. That costs around $0.60/lb. You pay the cut and wrap fee directly to the butcher when you pick up your order. You pay us directly for the beef. You can send us a check, or, if you prefer, we can set up a Paypal listing for you and you can pay with your credit card.
We require a $250 deposit for first time customers. You can pay online through Paypal, or you can send us a check. When your beef is ready, we will contact you with the final balance.

What does grass fed mean? Is that different from grass finished?
Grass finished means that the animal was brought to butcher weight only by eating grass. This used to be synonymous with grass fed, but some producers advertise their product as grass fed, even if they are finishing their animals on grain. Lazy R Beef is grass fed and finished and is never fed any grain.

Isn’t eating beef bad for the environment?
Most environmentalists would tell you yes. However, the statistics about the environmental impacts of beef production are all based on industrialized grain fed operations. At the Lazy R we strive to grow beef that will actually shrink your carbon footprint, by sequestering more carbon per head through our progressive grazing techniques, than we are releasing through production. We’ve done a baseline carbon analysis and over the next few years we will be monitoring our carbon sequestration so that we have data to support what we have long surmised: Lazy R Beef customers have smaller carbon foot prints than most vegetarians!

I don’t know how to cook grass fed beef. Help!
It is important to understand that cooking grass fed beef is very different from cooking corn fed. This website provides a good overview of some techniques that can be employed. If you’re still stumped, give us a call! We’d be happy to arrange a private cooking lesson out at the ranch at no cost.

What is “custom meat”?
“Custom” beef is butchered exactly the way you want it. You can contact our butcher, Quadra-K, to give them instructions. If you don’t have a specific preference, they will use their standard cut and wrap package, which is what our family personally uses.

What is direct marketing?
Direct marketing means we, the ranchers, are selling directly to you, the end consumer. This cuts out the many middle men that stand between you and the beef at the grocery store, allowing us to streamline costs and pass the savings on to you. It also allows for greater transparency. We are totally open to our customers viewing any part of our beef production process, from calving to slaughter.

What is planned grazing?
We have been practicing planned grazing for over ten years on the ranch. It is a deliberate process that seeks to closely mimic natural cycles for maximum ecological benefit. We make sure our cattle are in the right place, at the right time, for the right reasons. The resulting beef not only has no negative impact on the environment, but in fact has a positive impact on the environment! Our careful management has improved biodiversity, built topsoil (thus sequestering carbon), and improved pasture productivity.

What is Holistic Management?
One of the management tools we use on the ranch is Holistic Management. HM is a goal-driven decision-making process. Maurice was a certified HM educator for many years, and still does holistic management consulting through Managing Change Northwest.
